Natural Flow

Week 10

Continuing from Week Six, ‘Hope Seeps Through’ I purposefully created layers on newly prepared canvases in order to layer add a white layer and then see what happens when I add colour again. Building up thin layers gradually. I have been interested in the ways in which overlaying thin, transparent paint effects the final image. I was encouraged with this in one-to-one tutorial I had with Daleet Leon who came to visit Aberystwyth to teach two painting workshops.

Having left the first colour layer dry on a few of my paintings over the weekend, I was ready to go for my next layer, a thin solution of soft mixing white. This would hopefully take less time to dry than titanium white, or so I hoped! I was very pleased with the first attempts but there was something no quite right about the surface on the canvas. I had stretched and primed most of the canvases myself and I used quite a heavy weight canvas. This texture in the canvas has disrupted the natural flow of paint and created a slightly blurry effect.

The same painting with the second layer.
