Hidden Beauty

Week Eleven

14 April 2019

After spending some time contemplating last week’s painting work , and realising they wouldn’t be dry enough to paint on this week, I had a new plan! I would continue the paintings after the Easter break but for now I spent my time attempting to finesse canvas priming. I decided to try and get a canvas as smooth as possible. I applied thick coats of gesso and sanded it between coats. This was laborious and extremely tiring.

I tried an electric sander which worked a lot better for me. I managed after a week of priming with a fan brush (to reduce brush marks) and sanding, one nearly smooth canvas. There were still some areas lacking though. I look forward to painting on it after the holiday!

Yesterday I took a trip to Borth beach which is seven miles up the coast from Aberystwyth. I travelled by train with a friend of mine who is directing and producing a film based in the location. We were scouting out the sand dunes and the prehistoric submerged forest which stretches for the most part of the beach when the tide is low – it was unusually low this weekend.

I enjoyed exploring details of what is left behind.

Playing around with scale and camera angles.
